Nostalgia as Time Travel
Creating art anchored in nostalgia isn’t about the past, it’s a way of putting yourself inside a feeling you once had, to find out if it still holds true. Our youthful minds forged millions of neurons connected to ideas and artifacts that felt huge at the time: images, characters, aesthetics attached to real emotions. For me that was the 80s and 90s. Making pieces rooted in that era is less an act of preservation and more about re-examining those feelings. Does it still land? Does it still move you? And occasionally, does it ask harder questions now than it did then? The source of our nostalgia is the assumptions of a child we once knew, unexamined. Maybe seen different through the lens of experience.
